Infographic - The Composting Toilet
I got a prompt stating "From poop to prize onions: The process and use of the composting toilet." I chose to draw it by hand in my sketchbook (sorry for the photo quality), and show how the composting toilet works.
Notes, from top to bottom:
- vent rain cover
- fan
- vent
- toilet
- floor
- inspection door
- composting waste
- airflow
- finished compost
- access door
- excess liquid drain
How it works
- Instead of flushing with water, a composting toilet works using three elements: temperature, moisture, and oxygen
- Once you use the toilet you add a scoop of bulking material such as peat mix, sawdust or coconut fibers
- Since waste is 90% water, most of it evaporates through a ventilation system
- Aerobic bacteria breaks down the waste and bulking agents with the help of oxygen
- When bacteria work they maintain a temperature essential to composting
- After several weeks, the human waste and bulking agents have turned into compost
